Canonical’s Launchpad.net is currently not free software. The FAQ on the site explains no more than this. I contacted Mark Shuttleworth about it and he told me this:
“Parts of Launchpad are already free software, we’ve released pieces that we knew would help other projects like Gnome doing similar work. We’ll continue releasing pieces until, in a few years, the whole platform can be made free. If hackers are interested in helping to componentize a huge monolithic Zope3 app, we could release the Registry and Rosetta as standalone pieces a lot sooner.”
He says the FAQ will be updated to reflect this. So, conspiracy over. Unless you want to discuss the wording of “can be made free” rather than perhaps “will be”.
Mr. Shuttleworth has yet to deny eating babies.

I like the picture of Shuttleworth gone evil, that’s a crack up.
“The invisible hand of the market is jerking me off here” is one of the funniest capitalism-related things I have ever read.

I totally agree with Josh, awesome line.
[…] Uh oh. ELER took on my challenge and launched a Shuttleworth lynchpad. Let the FOSS comic fireworks begin! Although the Danes might appreciate the distraction. No hard feelings Tom. Let’s roll. […]
If we had to hand crank all XML parsers maybe people wouldn’t write so much damned XML.
is that mark or steven seagal?
You should have said, “you’re giving me an invisible handjob.”

LOL! This was a great episode, John!
I especially liked the evil eyebrows and the red eyes on Mark. It’s “w1k3d”.
The best part is that the launchpad.net plan even seems plausible! I’m going to sell my Red Hat and Novell stock and buy Apple stock, before it’s too late!
I know you must be getting a bit tired of this praise by know (“no, go on, go on!” I hear you say) but that invisible hand gag really is fantastic. And so right for ESR too. The man really is a bona fide headcase.
Shouldn’t you be attacking Microsoft?
Basta você visitar a tira (quase) semanal Everybody loves Eric Raymond. […]
Mark Shuttleworth has now confirmed on the ubuntu-sounder mailing list that he has “not eaten a lot of babies.”
yeah, the eyebrows, glowing eyes and smirk are a nice touch :)
‘can I work your crank’ *snort*
> Mark Shuttleworth has now confirmed on the ubuntu-sounder mailing list > that he has “not eaten a lot of babies.”
Well, if that quote is maximally restrictive, then that’s still a number larger than zero.

how can the words “free software” come out of esr’s mouth ? :D
Update already! If I can update my cut and paste web comic daily, surely with all the writing help you get you can update yours weekly.
ELER’s an ex-parrot, right?
Mark say’s he’s not eaten too many babies, just the few:

Yup. It is deceased. It has gone to meet its maker. It is pushing up the tulips. And the only reason it is still up is probably because it has been nailed to its web server.
Update allready !
In true open source spirit, when shall we be expecting a fork?
Wow, the lack of updates really is the open source way. But how do I get to the maintained CVS version?
