UN World Sum(mit)

everybody loves eric raymond episode 26 strip

“I am honored to follow Doctor Richard Stallman, the giant upon whose shoulders Open Source stands. When I say Open Source, I mean the same thing that Richard means when he says Free Software. There has been factionalism, but only because of personalities that no longer matter.” – Bruce Perens, UN World Summit on the Information Society Speech.

Of course when the apocalypse comes, the dead will walk the earth and Eric could just pop Bruce then, assuming he doesn’t run out of ammo on French socialists first.

Research credits to Daniel J Birkinshaw and Dave Williams. Script help, as always, Louisa, Gianni, Kev and Rule.

T-SHIRT UPDATE: It seems that I misunderestimated the height and girth of the ELER proletariat. So, in remediation, I have added 3 new t-shirt sizes: XXL, XXXL and, uhrm, XS. I’ve extended the pre-order time too to allow for this stupidity on my part. Apologies. The ELER shop has the new sizes, and a translation into inches.

This strip illustrates why I wouldn’t be interested in a T-shirt: Eric’s a has-been. He simply isn’t that relevant anymore, though he played a useful role in the late 90s convincing some corporations to free their code. Wearing an “Everybody loves Eric Raymond – except me” shirt suggests that they guy is more relevant than he is.

RMS, Perens, and Torvalds matter. ESR no longer does. He is a personality who no longer matters. Mentioning his name suggests that he does matter.

Well, OK, he’s still fun to make fun of. So carry on. Just so long as you don’t have Bruce, RMS, or ESR saying “whilst” again. That’s as jarring as a cartoon of Tony Blair saying “y’all” would be.

Of course when the apocalypse comes, the dead will walk the earth and Eric could just pop Bruce then, assuming he doesn’t run out of ammo on French socialists first.

…or European Code Fags.
