Eric hugger
Back in January, I promised to donate a tenner to the FSF for “a (genuine) photo of you hugging esr whilst wearing [an eler t-shirt]“.
Well, I’ve had my first claimant, Cathy Mullican! She writes:
the picture was taken last week at the World Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim, CA, which is why we’re in a hotel hallway and I’m wearing mouse ears. I knew I was likely to run into ESR at the con, even before I saw the panel schedule, but didn’t know if he’d go for the photo or not, until he commented on the shirt as we passed in the hall while party-hopping.
He did recognize it; he’s not a fan of the strip — thinks it’s more mean than funny — but I mentioned that part of the proceeds from the shirt sales went to FSF and the pledge for the picture, and his response was “Let’s do it!”
This is awesome. And I think it’s great Eric agreed to pose for the photo to help FSF, even though he’s not a fan of the strip. Good show ESR!
Quality is a little poor due to camera phone.

Why would Eric want to raise money for the FSF? I thought his opinion on the GPL was that it sucked! (He has said so publicly - thouh in different words!)

Chris: He’s still a supporter of free software. He just has different ideas about how best it should be envangelized.

john: ESR does not support Free Software as such. He’s part of a completely different movement.
